Eliza was born in 1808, although the 1850 census states she was born in 1802. She passed away in 1892.
One Ancestry researcher states that her parents were David and Mary Herring[1] of Wales, but they are too young. No source is stated, but see Agnes Shawver's notes, below.
Also see notes under Joseph Boger.
The following William and Elizabeth Herring, both born about 1806, of Blair, Pennsylvania on the 1850 census had children with names that parallel those of Benjamin and Eliza Fox. William might have been Eliza's brother?
Also note, S. W. Herring is the right age and location to be a sibling of Eliza.
According to a letter from Anges Shawver, Eliza had a brother named James Herring[2] who was governor of Iowa in the '30s. The only Herring that was governor of Iowa was Clyde LaVerne Herring[3][4] and he was far too young to be her brother. Clyde's father was James, but again he is too young to be a brother. Even Clyde's grandparents[5], David and Mary, are too young.
However, Anges Shawver's letter says James was in Corning, Iowa. John S. Herring is the right age and location to be a sibling of Eliza and he certainly was in Corning, Iowa. It seems that Agnes misremembered the name of Eliza's brother and likely John S. Herring is that person.
