Biography

Leslie Roy Heylen was born about February 1896 at Bridgewater, South Australia (Australia). He was the son of Joseph Heylen and Amelia Cavanaugh.
Leslie Heylen is an Anzac who served in World War One.

On 30th June 1915, Les enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force to fight overseas during the First World War. He was allocated to the 10th Australian Infantry Battalion, part of the 3rd Brigade then deployed at Gallipoli. [1] With many other reinforcements, he embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on 14th September 1915. Les was listed as being a single, 19-year old labourer, living at 225 Halifax Street, Adelaide, with his mother listed as next of kin. [2] Les joined the battalion at Gallipoli, was part of the evacuation in December that year and then deployed to the Western Front with the battalion in March 1916; where he remained until the end of the war. He attained the senior non-commissioned rank of Sergeant and was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Whilst In England, Les married Kate Bush on 30th November 1918 at Surrey. [3] Kate accompanied Les back to South Australia on 30th December 1919.

He later became a carpenter.

Having been widowered for eight years, Les passed away in 1977 at Koo-Wee-Rup, Victoria. He was 81 years of age. [4]
