Biography

Mary Highcock was born on 30 Sep 1861 in St Helens, Lancashire. She was the eldest child of James Highcock and Margaret (Cooney) Highcock.

Her sister Elizabeth was born in about 1863 in St Helens; her birth was registered in the first quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

Her sister Margaret Ellen was born in 1866 in St Helens; her birth was registered in the second quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

Her brother John was born in about 1868 in St Helens; his birth was registered in the first quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

Her brother Thomas was born in about 1871 in St Helens; his birth was registered in the first quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

By April 2nd 1871, they were still in Moor Flat, Windle, St Helens. Mary's father was working as an engine tender. Her baby brother Thomas was three months old.

Her brother James was born on 31 Mar 1873 in St Helens; his birth was registered in the second quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

Her brother Richard was born in 1875 in St Helens; his birth was registered in the second quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

Her sister Frances was born on 3 Sep 1879 at 64 College Street, St Helens.

By April 3rd 1881, they had moved to 64 College Street, Windle. Mary's father was employed as a saddler. The two eldest girls, Mary and Elizabeth, were working as servants. Sixteen-year-old Margaret Ellen wasn't in paid employment, so was probably helping her mother with housework. The eldest son, John, was an apprentice saddler.

Mary married William Kay on 14 Jan 1883 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, St Helens. William was 25 and a miner, Mary was 21. Neither had been married before, and both were living in Hardy Street. Their fathers were named as James Kay (miner) and James Highcock (labourer). The witnesses were Joseph Bradbury and Margaret Kay.

Mary's brother Richard died in 1883, aged 7. He was buried on 2 June 1883 in St Helens Cemetery.

William and Mary's daughter Alice was born in 1885 in St Helens; her birth was registered in the last quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

Their daughter Grace was born on 29 May 1888 in St Helens.

Their daughter Margaret was born on 6 Jan 1891 in St Helens.

By April 5th 1891, William and Mary were living at 50 Lowe Street, Windle. William was working as a coal miner; little Margaret was four months old. The family had one lodger, a coal miner named Henry Potter.

Mary's father died in 1894 in St Helens, aged 50 according to the death registration. He was buried on 25 Aug 1894 in St Helens Cemetery; his age was given in the burial record as 51.

William and Mary's daughter Mary was born on 16 Oct 1894 in St Helens.

Their son Hugh was born on 12 Sep 1899 in St Helens.

By March 31st 1901, the family were living at 42 Corporation Street, St Helens. William was a daywageman miner. Alice, now fifteen, was a glass cutter at a glass works.

William and Mary's twins William and Elizabeth were born in 1902 in St Helens; their births were registered in the last quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

William died in 1906 in St Helens, aged 48.

Mary's mother died in 1907 in St Helens, aged 61. She was buried on 11 Nov 1907 in St Helens Cemetery.

By April 2nd 1911, the family were still in Windle. Mary had work as a housekeeper; Maggie and Mary were glass carriers at the sheet glass works.

Mary died in 1943 in St Helens, aged 82. She was buried on 14 Dec 1943 in St Helens Cemetery.
