Biography

This profile is part of the Hildreth Name Study.
Bascom was a Railway Company Employee.

Bascom Horace Hildreth was born on 02 July 1896 in Coffee County, Alabama, United States. He was the son of Robert Henry Jackson Hildreth (1846-1907) and Annie Ruth (Carmichael) Hildreth (1872-1947).[1]

Bascom was 3 years old when the 1900 United States Census was taken. He was living in the household of his parents in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.[2]

Bascom was living in Enterprise in the household of his mother when the 1910 United States Census was taken. He was 14 years old.[3]

The Newmans wrote in their book, The Hildreth Family, that Bascom Horace Hildreth left his home in Enterprise as a young man. They thought that he may have spent his life in Memphis, Tennessee working for the Snuff Company, but the company did not respond to their inquiries. Only one brief paragraph is accorded to Bascom Horace Hildreth in their book.[4]

Records for Bascom Horace Hildreth have been found since then which gave some detail of his life after leaving Enterprise.

1914 - B. Horace Hildreth was living in Montgomery, Alabama and was working as a waiter.[5]

1916 - Horace Hildreth was living in Montgomery, Alabama and working at a waiter at Catoma Cafe.[6]

1916 - There is a record for the marriage of Bascom Horace Hildreth and Leo Land on 4 Mar 1916 in Muscogee County, Georgia.[7]

1918 - A World War I Draft Registration Card was completed by "Bascom Horace Hildrith" on 05 June 1918 in Berrien County, Michigan. On this card the registrant said he was born 02 Jul 1896 in Coffee County, Alabama. He stated he was working for the Standard Oil Company in Benton Harbor, a town in Berrien County, Michigan. His wife, Myrtle Leo Hildreth, was listed as the person who would always know his address. His eyes were described as gray and his hair was noted as being dark brown. Aside from the misspelling of the last name and him saying his father was born in Dublin, Ireland, other information seems to confirm this is Bascom Horace Hildreth.[8]

1920 = A 1920 United States Census record has not yet been located.

1921-1922 - Bascom Horace Hildreth may have moved to Memphis, Tennessee because of his job. In the 1921 Memphis, Tennessee City Directory he was listed as a pumper for the Standard Oil Company. No spouse was listed with him.[9] In the 1922 Memphis, Tennessee City Directory he was listed as a clerk for the Standard Oil Company of Louisiana. No spouse was listed with him.[10] (Note: He was not listed in the 1920 Memphis City Directory.)

1924 - Bascom H. Hildreth was listed in the 1924 Memphis, Tennessee, City Directory. No spouse was listed as living with him. The word "lunch" was in this entry. On another page in the same directory, a business listing, shows B. H. Hildreth ran a lunch stand at 1126 Mississippi Blvd.[11]

1926 - In the Memphis, Tennessee, City Directory, 1926 B. H. Hildreth had a business listing for billiards at 1481 1/2 Mississippi Blvd.[12] In his personal listing in the same directory, his spouse was named Millie M.[13]

1927 - In the 1927 Memphis, Tennessee City Directory, Bascom H. Hildreth was again listed with Millie M. as his spouse.[14] His place of business was listed under the "Restaurants" heading and was located on Hernando Rd.[15]

1928 - According to the Memphis, Tennessee, City Directory, 1928, Horace B. Hildreth was the propietor of "Moses Sandwich Shop."[16]

1929 - Horace B. Hildreth and wife "Elise" were listed in the Memphis, Tennessee, City Directory, 1929. Since the preparation for the publication occurred the year before, it might be assumed they married about 1928. His occupation was again listed as "Moses Sandwich Shop."[17]

1930 - On the 1930 United States Census for Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee Horace B. Hidreth, age 33, born in Alabama, was listed with Alese Hildreth as his wife. His father-in-law, Ben Chatham, was a member of the household, as well as two step-children, Robert and Marion. The occupations of both Horace B. and Alese were given as "Restaurant - Cafe." They were paying $45.00 a week to rent the house in which they were living at 1206 Azalea Street[18]

1931 - 1937 - Bascom and Alese Hildreth continued operating "Moses Sandwich Shop."[19][20][21][22][23]

1940- On the 1940 United States Census, the family was still living in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Ben P. Chatham was listed a head of household. His wife was Byrd N. Ben's son-in-law Bascom H. Hildreth, his daughter Alese, and his grandchildren Robert B. Hawes and Marion A. Hawes made up the remainder of the household. At this time, Bascom H. Hildreth was working as a time-keeper on a W.P.A. Storm Drainage Project.[24]

1948 - Sometime in the 1940s, Bascom Horace Hildreth began working as a clerk for "IC RR" (Illinois Central Rail Road.)[25]

1950 - Bascom, his wife Alese, and Alese's father were living at 1579 McLemore in Memphis. Bascom was 53 years old and working as a baggage clerk for a railroad.[26]

1960 - Information in the 1960 Memphis City Directory listed Bascom H. Hildreth still working as a clerk for "IC RR."[27] This correlated with a claim which was made to the United States Railroad Retirement System stating that B. Hildreth, date of birth Jul 1896, date of death May 1975, worked for the railroad.[28]

1975 - Bascom H. Hildreth died in 1975. He and Alese C. Hildreth are jointly interred in Memorial Park Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. The dates inscribed on the marker for Bascom H. Hildreth were 1896 - 1975. For Alese C. Hildreth the inscribed birth year was 1904 but the death year is blank. A separate Find A Grave memorial for her says that her year of death was 1991. A scroll decoration between their names was inscribed, "Together Forever."[29][30]
