William Hill was born 20 April 1764 in Scarsdale, Westchester, New York. [1][2][3][4]
He passed away 10 Oct 1844 in Walpack Center, Sussex, New Jersey. [5]
Written by Bob Demarest: "William Hill did not come south from New York State to settle in Sussex County, New Jersey until well into his middle age. When he did come, some of his adult sons and their families accompanied him on what is said to have been a "boat trip" down the Delaware River. The tract of land which he purchased around 1830 or so, may have been known to him before his journey. This tract..known as the "Plumstead Tract" was one owned by that family for about a hundred years or so..and had passed down through members of that family. This property of about 390 Acres was situated just above the line which now seperates Warren and Sussex Counties...just above the Village known as Millbrook Village..now a part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area. Shortly after their arrival, William and sons are said to have constructed a sawmill about a half mile ? above Millbrook Vilage along what is known as VanCampens Millbrook. This brook flows on down thru Millbrook Village passing a site a mile or more south of MIllbrook where the VanCampen Familiy in the mid 1700s had built early mills which sawed logs and ground grain for local inhabitants. None of the earliest Hill family houses on this tract are standing today although I have seen a copy of a photo said to be the Hill Saw Mill showing a single blade up and down or reciprocating type saw mill. A copy of this black and white photo was given to me by Arthur Dickison in the 1980s. He told me the photo was copied from a book he found in the Hackettetown Library. "
