Biography

Alexander 'Sandy' Hill was born September 12, 1800 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Alexander Hill and Margaret Ewart. Alexander's obituary reports POB Edinburgh; the book "The Descendants of Alexander (Sandy) Hill" reports POB Pencaithland,East Lothian, Scotland. Family Search.Org has an Alexander with identical parentage christened May 18, 1792 Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland. This could be a previously named Alexander who died before the journey to Nova Scotia.[1]

His parents and some of his siblings landed in Pictou, Pictou County, Nova Scotia on June 27, 1809 aboard the ship "Hope".

It appears Sandy and his brothers lived for some time in Economy, Colchester County, and in the Truro, Colchester County area of Nova Scotia, where still to this day, there are families with surname Hill.

He eventually moved to Tenecape/Moosebrook, Hants County where the family settled.

Sandy and his wife Maria are buried in Moosebrook Cemetery along with many family members.

Obituary "On the 31st, October 1889, Alexander Hill, one of the old and respected patriarchs of Hants County passed away. He was born in Edinburgh in the year 1800. He left Scotland for Nova Scotia in the year 1809 and landed in Pictou. For sometime he sojourned there and in Truro and Economy. In 1845 he purchased land in Tenecape where he lived and laboured until his death. In 1862 he was ordained to the eldership, an office which he honourably filled until the day of his death. Though his body was bowed down with it's load of 89 years, the man himself was one of the human race that never got old. His mind seemed so active and young at death, as ever it was. As a citizen and companion, he was honest, peaceable and happy. His youthful energy, active intellect, unassuming manner, gentle heart, and Christian character made him a useful, pleasant associate for all stages of life. While the Noel congregation will miss him as an office bearer, and his large circle of friends will miss him as a companion, they have reason to thank God that they have seen him entering "the valley" in triumph, resting on the arm of his beloved."
