Stephen Robert Hindman, the eldest of his parents children, was born in 1843, rural Cecil County, Maryland, United States to parents Samuel Hindman and Prudence Woodrow. In the 1898 City Directory, Esther 'Bella' Hindman, widow, is living at 911 N. 29th St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With her in Philadelphia are Samuel Hindman, bookkeeper, living at 2610 N. Orianna and Samuel A. Hindman, carpenter, living at 3211 Irving, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.^[3]
