Research Note

(Submitted by ML Williams) Thesis written by Newton Haskin James based on the Journal of Josiah Hinds.

Part of the information in the thesis I know to be incorrect. Frances Elizabeth Hinds Piercy (1827-1904) was married to Duke Piercy. Duke died in the battle of Vicksburg. Frances Elizabeth lived with her son, William Thomas Piercy and his wife, Alice Elizabeth Dodson. My grandmother, Mary Frances Piercy Nichols, slept in the bed with Frances Elizabeth up until her death. Grandmother was very close to her grandmother.

As mentioned above, Josiah had a son named Washington Lafayette Hinds. He was born in 1832/1833 in Alabama, never married and died young. Another man named Lafayett “Fate” Hinds was born in 1828 presumably in Alabama, and this man has incorrectly been merged with Washington Lafayette into one person. Unfortunately, this error has been continued throughout trees on almost every program. As of this writing, the first documentation found for Fate is when he married his first wife, Martha A. Nowlin, in 1851 in Cherokee, TX. She died in 1860 and he married 3 more times. He had a total of 7 children between his wives. He continue to live in Texas until his death in 1911. It is clear that Lafayett “Fate” Hinds is NOT the son of Josiah Hinds. I encourage anyone who has him attached to Josiah to please correct your trees. Additionally, if anyone knows anything at all about who Fate’s parents were, please let me know.
