Biography

Virgil was born 3 Apr 1895 in Goldendale, Klickitat, Washington. He was the son of Vernon Taylor Hinshaw and Hattie Elizabeth Snider.

In 1900 he was living in Goldendale, Goldendale City, and Number 4 Precincts Goldendale city, Klickitat, Washington.[1] The household included Vernon L Hinshaw age 42 born in Indiana, wife H* Hinshaw age 34 born in Kansas, son Virgil V Hinshaw age 5 born in Washington, daughter Ruth Hinshaw age 4 born in Washington, father-in-law Jesse J Synder age 58 born in Tennessee and mother-in-law Leuitia Synder age 62 born in Tennessee. Vernon was a farmer. Hattie was the mother of 2 children, both living. Leuitia was the mother of 5 children, all living.

In 1910 he was living in Newberg Ward 2, Yamhill, Oregon.[2] The household included Vernon F Hinshaw age 51 born in Indiana, wife Hattie E Hinshaw age 44 born in Kansas, son Virgil Hinshaw age 15 born in Washington, daughter Ruth C Hinshaw age 13 born in Washington, son Cecil F Hinshaw age 9 born in Washington and son Fredrick L Hinshaw age 6 born in Washington. Vernon was a farmer. Hattie was the mother of 4 children, all living.

On Jun 5 1917 Virgil Vernon Hinshaw, age 22, registered for the World War I draft in Yamhill County, Oregon. He declared he was born April 3 1895 in Goldendale, Washington, and was then residing at 816 E. 9th, Newberg, Oregon, single and a student at Pacific College. He claimed an exemption due to "Member of Friends Church" and "Conscientious reasons" [sic]. He was recorded as tall, slender, blue eyes, dark brown hair.[3]

On May 3 1918 Virgil Vernon Hinshaw was issued a U.S. passport. He declared he was born April 3rd 1895 in Goldendale, Washington, and his father, V. T. Hinshaw was born in Indiana and was then residing at Newberg, Oregon. Virgil declared he was then residing in Newberg, Oregon, occupied as a farmer. He declared he intended to depart May 15 1918 from the port of New York, on board "to be determined later", intending to visit France for the purpose of "to engage in reconstruction work on behalf of American Friends Reconstruction Unit". Where the pre-printed form stated "I do solemnly swear" Virgil lined-through "swear", replacing it with "affirm". He was recorded as age 23, 6' 2 1/2" tall, blue eyes, medium brown hair, fair complexion, oval face, and "small scar on left temple".[4]

In 1920 he was living in Newberg, Yamhill, Oregon.[5] The household included Vernon Hinshaw age 60 born in Indiana, wife Hattie Hinshaw age 53 born in Kansas, son Virgil Hinshaw age 24 born in Washington, son Cecil Hinshaw age 18 born in Washington and son Fredrick Hinshaw age 16 born in Washington. Vernon was a farmer.

Hazel Reed and Virgil Vernon Hinshaw were married 01 Aug 1926 in Yamhill, Oregon.[6]Hazel was born May 31 1903, Nebraska. To this union were born:

In 1940 he was living in Newberg, Election Precinct 4 Southeast Newberg, Yamhill, Oregon.[8] The household included Virgil V Hinshaw born in Washington, wife Hazel Hinshaw age 36 born in Colorado (sic), son Vernon V Hinshaw age 12 born in Oregon, daughter Doris M Hinshaw age 9 born in Oregon, daughter Ruth E Hinshaw age 8 born in Oregon and daughter Janet L Hinshaw age 3 born in Oregon. Virgil was a farmer.

On Apr 27 1942 Virgil Vernon Hinshaw, age 47, registered for the World War II draft in McMinnville, Yamhill County, Oregon. He declared he was born April 3 1895 in Goldendale, Washington, and was then residing at 816 E. 9th, Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon, a self-employed farmer. He declared his relative/contact was Cecil Hinshaw of Newberg. He was recorded as 6'3" tall, 165 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion.[9]

Virgil died 5 Feb 1976 (aged 80), Yamhill County, Oregon, and was buried in Friends Cemetery, Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon, 07 Feb 1976.[10][11][12]
