William was a Confederate veteran serving in Co. G., 34th North Carolina infantry. He enlisted in Mecklenburg County, NC, on 30 September 1861, at the age of 22, giving his occupation as farmer. He was wounded at Chancellorsville but returned to duty in January of 1864. He was captured at the Battle of North Anna on 23 May 1864. He was paroled on March 14, 1865, having served his country in arms for nearly 3 1/2 years.
