Biography

John was born about 1721. He passed away in 1807.

Notice of 1807 death of John Hiscock appeared in Freeman's Friend, Portland, Maine. Nov 7, 1807. It simply states: "In Newcastle, Mr. John Hiscock, aged 86". Notice of death also appeared in Gazette of Portland, Maine 2 Nov 1807. There is another listing of his death in the 11 Oct 1807 issue of the Wiscasset Republican (Vital Records from Maine Newspaper, Vol. 1, p 288). The death is also mentioned in "Vital Records of Old Bristol and Nobleboro" (Christine Huston Dodge)... "called to attend the funeral of old Mr., who died at his son William, at the age of 86 and over. Mon. 12,Oct 1807" .

Research Notes

John Hiscock is a brother of Richard Hiscock who married Jane McFadden. They came with their father (unnamed) to Bristol, circa 1731. The unnamed father lived on 1 or 2 acre lots in Bristol at Jones point about 1/2 mile below where the lower falls are where the toll bridge was in 1809. The father moved after 2 years up the river about 1.5 miles above the falls or bridge on to a 40 acre lot, which lies in what was known as Nobleborough in 1809. The father extended the lot in back about a mile and 1/4 of a mile from the Damariscotta River. The father left the area in 1743 due to Indian War, but John Hiscock age about 22, returned to the area in Fall 1743 and stayed in the area. and occupied and possessed the land of his father. The same lot being 40 rods on the river, was still occupied and possessed by sons of John Hiscock in 1809, namely Samuel Hiscock and William Hiscock. It seems that the son named William Hiscock is the William Hiscock (1772-1841) who married Martha Chapman. At least, he is the only William (that I'm aware of) living in the area in 1807, when father John died at the house of his son William.
