William Chauncey Hissong was born on about 1860 in Elkhart County, Indiana. His parents were Jacob Hissong and Malinda Clay.
When he was young, his family moved to Fairfield Twp., DeKalb, Indiana.
He was one of six children. His siblings were:
Nancy
Elizabeth
Elijah
Jacob E.
Ella V.
On July 3, 1883, he married Mahalo Hosler in DeKalb County, Indiana. They moved to Corunna and lived in that area for the rest of their lives. They had two sons:
John Grover
Garl (or Carl)
It appears that Chauncey and Mahalo took in the three daughters of Frances Hosler Pairan, who died in 1898. The foster daughter mentioned in Chauncey’s obituary is one of these girls:
Vesta
Flossie Savilla
Mae Bernice
Chauncey was employed as a trackman with the New York Central Railroad.
Near the end of his life, he was being treated for kidney disease. He had gone to Elkhart to stay with a foster daughter, Mrs. Arthur Wiltrout to be near to the medical services he needed.
He died in Elkhart on July 21, 1936. He is buried in Fairfield Twp. Cemetery, DeKalb, Indiana.
Research Notes
The 1860 Census record is dated June 26, 1860. William C. age is shown as 8/12. Was he born on Nov. of 1859?
The foster daughter, Mrs. Arthur Wiltrout, appears to be Mae Bernice Pairan, who could be the daughter of Frances Hosler Pairan, who may be a sister of Chauncey’s wife Mahalo Hosler. More research is needed to verify these relationships.
