Biography
Thomas Hodgson was born about 1852 in Distington, Cumberland, England.[1][2][3]
In the 1861 England census, Thomas Hodgson (10) was living in Little Clifton, Cumberland, with parents Joseph Hodgson (51) and Elizabeth Hodgson (41) and siblings William (20), Robert (12), Jane (6) and John (4).[2]
In 1871, Thomas Hodgson (19, born Distington) was living in Little Clifton, Cumberland, with parents Joseph Hodgson (60) and Elizabeth Hodgson (52), and siblings Robert (22), John (14) and Elizabeth Lowery (10, niece).[4]
Thomas Hodgson married Elizabeth Fisher in 1876 in Cumberland, England.[5]
In 1881, Thomas Hodgson (29, born Distington, Cumberland) was living in Parton, Cumberland, with wife Elizabeth Hodgson (31) and children Joseph (4), Fisher (3), George (2) and Sarah J (1), and with Sarah Moore (73, boarder) and Thomas Fisher (28, boarder). He was working as a labourer.[3]
The family emigrated to Australia. They arrived in Tasmania from London, England on 16 Dec 1886 on the ship Ionia. The family included Thomas Hodgson (30), Elisabeth (30), Joseph (8), Fisher (6), Elizabeth (3) and Mary (1). They were from Cumberland, England, Thomas was identified as an engineer.[6]
They had son William Robb Hodgson who was born on 20 Jul 1887 in Tasmania, son of Thomas Hodgson and Elizabeth Fisher.[7]
Thomas Hodgson died in 1919 in Portland, Tasmania, Australia.[8]

There is another Thomas Hodgson's living in Cumberland, England in this time period, also married to an Elizabeth. This Thomas was born in 1854, not in Distincton, and remained in Cumberland area. Some online family trees incorrectly assign his records to the current Thomas Hodgson. Records for the other Thomas Hodgson include:

- 1891 England census: Thomas Hodgson (37, born about 1854 in Prospect, Cumberland), living in Chapel Brow, Cumberland, with wife Elizabeth (45, born about 1846 in Bassenwaithe, Cumberland) and children Jane (20), Joseph (17), George (16), Tomas William (11), Elizabeth (9) and Sarah A (8).[10]
- 1901 England census: Thomas Hodgson (47, born about 1854 in Porshect [Prospect?] Maryport, Cumberland), living in Chapel Brow, Cumberland, with wife Elizabeth (56, born about 1845 in Bassenthwaite, Cumberland) and children Thomas William, Elizabeth and Sarah Ann.[11]
