Alva was born in 1885. He was the son of John Swisher Hole (1840-1911) and Lydia Margaret Finkbone (1845-1932).
He married Adaline Eve Maffett in 1907.[1] They were the parents of the following children (per Alva's granddaughter as well as FamilySearch):
Alda Mae Hoel (born before 1906, possibly in OH, died at 18 months, buried in Sheridan, MI)[2]
Opal Gladys Hoel 1908-1985 m1 Jack Chaffee m2 Roland Jacobson
William Delbert Hoel 1911-1995 m Mozelle Alice Ryckman
John Nelson Hoel 1913-1989 m Alice Elizabeth Grover
Myrtle Esther Hoel 1916-1987 m Arthur Hilbrands
Mark Hoel 1921-1996 m Mary Nixon
His granddaughter wrote:
Mom (Myrtle Esther) recalled that she was in third grade (mid 1920s) when Alva changed the spelling of the name from Hole to Hoel because “Uncle Will changed his”. Her grandmother (Lydia Margret Finkbone Hole) did not change her name as she was concerned that it might affect her Civil War pension.
Alva and Addie moved to Michigan when his parents moved there.
Alva Hoel was a millwright, so the family moved with the lumber boom towns around Lake City, Arlene and Jennings, Michigan. One of his early jobs, however was as millwright to the prison factory in Ionia Michigan, where juveniles built furniture. I don't know how long he worked there, but his draft papers for WWI list that he was employed by the State of Michigan at Ionia in 1918. After the big lumber companies around Lake City moved on, the Hoels bought a 500 acre plot of land near his parents' farm. Although they grew potatoes and other crops, Alva continued working in lumber, running a portable sawmill for smaller land owners and moving houses from lumber ghost towns.
Opal and Mark stayed in Michigan. After WWII, Delbert moved to Arizona. Myrtle's family moved several times: Oregon, Arizona, Guam, Palau, Guam, Oregon. John moved to Arizona in the 1970s.

Notes
Still need 1910 and 1940 census records. It appears LNAB should be Hole rather than Hoel but will leave it for now. Father is already on WT. Hole-853
