Biography

Alfred was born in 1880. He was the son of Carl Hoffman and Sophia Steinhauser.

Joe was an undertaker in Foxton from around 1918, right through the 1920s and possibly later into 1935. In those days a single occupation was often not enough to support a large family, so Joe also worked as a cabinet maker, carpenter, and builder.

Mary was known as May. She milked cows at their Union Street address and the children helped with milk delivery using a horse and cart to take milk from local farms to householders.

After the death of May, Joe married Elsie Rachel McKay, herself the widow of Ronald Gavin Watson.
