John Rose Holden was born on 22 February 1810 at Beaminster, Dorsetshire, England. He passed away on 1 May 1860 at Lark Hill, Worcester.
In 1829, Holden was commissioned an Ensign with the 17th Regiment and arrived with his regiment in Sydney in February 1831. In August 1834, he retired to Retreat Farm, near Liverpool, and became a patron of horse-racing and hunting.
In 1842 he built Everleigh House, named for his mother, on part of the Hutchison Estate at Redfern.
John Rose Holden was the Foundation Councillor for Brisbane Ward, Sydney Council, 1842 to 1846.
In 1843, he became a Director of the Bank of New South Wales, and was Vice-President in 1846 and President in 1851. He became a magistrate in 1845.
Holden was a Director of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company and the Sydney Infirmary. He was elected secretary of Sydney College and of the Australian Jockey Club in 1844 and of Homebush Races in 1845.
A biography about him, concentrating on his racing achievements, with an illustration similar to that opposite, was published in the newspaper Bell's Life in Sydney and Sporting Reviewer in 1847.[1]
He was elected MLC for Cumberland Boroughs, in September 1851 and served until 1856.
Marriage 1: to Mary Hutchinson (1809–1849) on 1 March 1834 at St James Church of England, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.[2]
They had five children, and sadly four of them died in infancy. Mary died in 1849.
Marriage 2: Marriage to Susan Broadhurst (1807–1887) on 7 May 1853 at Christchurch St Lawrence (Church of England) in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. [3]
Before he left for England, he advertised for sale in November 1854, "The thoroughbred entire colt Camden ... undoubtedly the finest colonial thoroughbred that has ever appeared on the turf."[4]

Will and Probate John Rose Holden of Parramatta, Esquire, wrote his will in 1854: mentions son George Holden, and wife Susan Holden who are executors; mentions sister in law Emily Broadhurst; friend Andrew Hardie McCulloch of Elizabeth Street solicitor; Mary Sylvester of Clarence Street Sydney "who has ever shown an affectionate regard for my late wife myself and my children"; son Henry Augustus Holden "at present under the care of Mary Sylvester of Clarence Street Sydney". Probate was granted 16 October 1860.[7] Probate was also proved at Worcester on 14 January 1861 by son George Holden, gentleman, of 15 Vineyards in the parish of Walcot in the city of Bath.[8]
A son, Henry Augustus Holden, is mentioned in his will.
