Daniel was an Ohio Squirrel Hunter. Civilians from sixty-five Ohio counties numbering 15,766 men reported for duty to help defend Ohio and particularly Cincinnati from Confederate invasion. These men became known as the "Squirrel Hunters."
In civilian life, Daniel was a lawyer as was his father. He was the son of Frances and Elizabeth McNaughton Hollenbeck and arrived in Wood County at about the age of 13. He married his wife Frances Bruce in 1884. Daniel was an astute businessman and was mayor of Perrysburg from 1894 to 1896.
