Research Notes

There were many contemporary John Holloways in colonial Virginia making it difficult to pinpoint his lineage. His probate record seems to confirm widespread lore that he was killed by Native Americans near Fort Natchez in Oct 1781.

Y-DNA Study

Male Holloways who suspect descent from John are highly encouraged to participate in the Holloway Y-DNA Project to understand his relation to contemporary Holloway families.

  • Information posted by StevenRoss79 on May 22, 2014, "According to her grandfather, Robert, husband John moved to Natchez in about 1780 which was then Spanish territory in order to escape the Revolution. In October 1781 John Holloway was shot & scalped by Indians, 5 leagues from the Fort of Natchez. At the time he worked as an overseer of the plantation of John Havard. Son George was tied with a rope but later escaped. George at age 14 or 15 goes back east , lives with his grandfather, James Taylor White & Uncle William White "Esquire" on Mulberry Creek, Caldwell County, North Carolina and later becomes a Methodist Minister. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I did some major formatting for readability on this profile without much of an eye on accuracy of sources or coherency of the information I was formatting. It likely needs some additional work and I'm not sure we need to transcribe the entire probate record verbatim.

I did want to make note of one section I removed:

Nov 1760

Rachell gives to her son John his share of his father's estate. It amounts to a little over eight pounds.

This seemed to be unsourced and unclear if it's referring to the same John even on the old website much of the bio information was pulled from. It would likely place him in the Caroline Co., VA line Robert Holloway (bef.1710-bef.1748) family, but making that link would require some more hardened evidence.
