Note on Identity

Jonathan Holt who married Anna Faulkner was not the son of Zebadiah Holt. Please read the summary below and research notes. Jonathan Holt who married Anna Faulkner was aged 62 years in 1820 when he made a statement related to his pension application. He died in 1833 at age 75. Both these are consistent with a birth in 1758, so he is not the Jonathan born in 1750 the son of Zebadiah,

Biography

JONATHAN HOLT,[1] b. at Hampton, about 1758 and baptized on 14 Nov 1762[2] son of Nathaniel and Phebe (Canady) Holt;[3] d. at Hampton, 11 Aug 1833 at age 75[4] and is interred at South Cemetery;[5] m. at Hampton, 19 Oct 1780,[6] ANNA FAULKNER, b. 23 Nov 1761 daughter of Caleb and Esther (Morse) Faulkner; Anna d. at Hampton, 31 Aug 1842.

Jonathan's father Nathaniel died in 1763 when Jonathan was about five years old. Jonathan was "adopted" by his uncle Jonathan Holt who was Nathaniel's oldest brother. Uncle Jonathan did not have children of his own. He left the bulk of the estate to his nephew Jonathan and his wife Anna.[7]

Jonathan enlisted for a term of one year in June 1776 in the company of Capt. Benoni Cutler in a regiment commanded by Col. Andrew Ward. He was honorably discharged on 4 May 1777. He made application for a pension based on his service on 4 January 1820. On 28 June 1820, Jonathan reported he was farmer by occupation but now unable to work but little. His household at that time was his wife Anna age fifty-nine and in “pretty good health”, a daughter Julia age seventeen and in good health, and a granddaughter age six in good health.

On 26 November 1836, Anna Holt, age seventy-five years and a resident of Hampton, made a statement related to her widow’s pension application. Anna reported that in 1781, Benedict Arnold and British troops attacked New Haven, and that Jonathan was ordered to repair to New Haven to assist with the defense. (Arnold’s attack on New Haven occurred in 1779 so there is inconsistency in Anna’s report).

On 8 January 1855, Polly Faulkner a daughter of Jonathan and Anna, and then a resident of Stafford, Connecticut, provided a statement related to the pension. After relating that her mother died on 31 August 1842, she provided the following as the only living children of Jonathan and Anna: Nathaniel Holt of the State of New York; James Holt of Hampton; Lucy Kingsbury of New York; Samuel Holt of Union; Polly Faulkner of Stafford; Maxamilla Beers of Hampton; and Julia Morse of Canterbury. Children Josiah M. Holt, Caleb Holt, and Cordelia Holt were deceased. This statement was related to an increase in the amount of the pension that seemed to have not all been received and might still be due.[8]

Research Notes

Jonathan Holt who married Anna Faulkner was not the son of Zebadiah Holt. Zebadiah Holt did not leave a will and his estate was inventoried 3 April 1760. There was some dispute related to the settlement of the estate and the portion that should be received by eldest son Zebadiah being questioned by other of the heirs and then all parties agreeing to arbitration. The dispute centered on the amount that Zebadiah should receive for his labor on his father’s farm between the time he had come of age and his father’s decease. Those heirs or representatives agreeing to the arbitration were Zebadiah Holt, Isaac Burnam, George Martin, Ichabod Downing, Sarah Holt, Aaron Fuller, and Thomas Butler. Isaac Burnam, Aaron Fuller, and Thomas Butler signed on behalf of themselves and their respective wives, George Martin signed as guardian to Josiah Holt, Ichabod Downing as guardian for Marcy Holt, and widow Sarah Holt signing as guardian for Abigail Holt. The distribution from the estate was made in 1760. Of note is there is no son Jonathan included in the distribution of the estate.[19]

  3. Durries’s Holt genealogy and other published sources state that Jonathan Holt who married Anna Faulkner was the son of Zebadiah and Sarah (Flint) Holt. But Zebadiah’s son Jonathan was deceased before 1760 as evidenced by his absence from the distribution in the settlement of Zebadiah’s estate.
