Biography

John de Humet,[1] or du Hommet, lord of Cléville, is found living 1203-1216. [2]

John, son of Jordan du Hommet, confirms the gift of the church of Sheringham by Earl Walter Giffard to Notley. [3]

  • To the sheriff of Northamptonshire. Order to place in respite, until upon his first account at the Exchequer, the demand he makes from Richard de Gray by summons of the Exchequer for the fine which the knights of the honour of Leicester made with King John, the king’s father, for his passage to Poitou, and the demand he makes from the same Richard by summons of the Exchequer for a loan made to John de Humet, whose land he has, having accepted security from him that he will satisfy the king then.

  • Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to place in respite, until upon his next account at Michaelmas in the ninth year, the demand for £14 that he makes from Richard de Gray by summons of the Exchequer for the debt of John de Humet, father of Lucy, wife of the same Richard, whose heir she is.

Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to place in respite the demand he makes by summons of the Exchequer from Richard de Gray for the fine that John de Humet made with King John for his passage into Poitou and for scutage of the same journey, until upon his view at the Exchequer in the tenth year.

The king has granted to Richard de Gray that, of the £7 which he owes of the debt of John de Humet, of which he ought to have rendered £3 10s. to the king at Michaelmas in the eleventh year and £3 10s. at Easter next following in the twelfth year, he may render £3 10s. at the Exchequer of Easter in the same year and £3 10s. at the Exchequer of Michaelmas next following in the same year. Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to cause his livestock taken for this reason to be delivered to him."

[Lands Of The Normans] Not dated – John du Hommet, with the assent of HIS WIFE HAWISE, confirms the grant of Walter Giffard of the church of Sheringham to Nutley abbey.

[Lands Of The Normans] 22 June 1205 – The king has pardoned John de Hommet 50 marks that John owes for his fine to recover his lands. Order to the barons of the Exchequer that John is quit.

[Lands Of The Normans] 22 June 1206 – Robert de Angerville gives 20 marks for a writ of right directed to Roger Bigod earl of Norfolk re one fee in Spronghton, of which he claims Basilia de Furneaux deforced him; and for a writ of right to the keepers of the honour of Leicester re the manor of Newbottle, of which he claims that John du Hommet deforced him.

[Lands Of The Normans] 14 March 1207 – The king to all sheriffs in whose bailiwicks Baldwin Wake and John de Hommet hold lands – seize all of Baldwin and John’s lands, with all chattels therein, into the king’s hands and deliver them to Ralph de Truleville, to whom the king has granted the keeping of the said lands during pleasure. Also inform Baldwin and John that they are to leave the king’s lands within three weeks.

John and Henry do not come. A day is given for the morrow of St Martin and he has a writ to attach the said John and Henry because they did not come. Anker appoints Stephen de Fretewell as his attorney.

[Lands Of The Normans] 1 March 1210 – Robert de Angerville, who essoined himself de malo lecti in the county of Suffolk vs. John du Hommet in a plea of land, says Ralph Lamberd that he was not been viewed and that he has recovered from his illness, and he claims licence to rise. He has licence to come to Northampton the quindenes of Ash Wednesday.

[Lands Of The Normans] 5 May 1210 – John du Hommet claims vs. Robert de Angerville one fee in Ingarsby and in Willoughby as his right; Robert de Angerville comes and puts himself on the grand assize but says that he should not have to answer this assize, because [John’s] grandmother had a certain son called Robert de Bonnesbosq [Bonebote] by her first husband, and his [Robert de Bonnesbosq] sister is John’s mother, so that his heirs have a greater right to that land than John; John comes by his attorney and says that he claims nothing through his grandmother but by his mother and that she was seised of the said land by right. Judgement that the assize should proceed, and four knights come and elect a jury of twelve. A day is given at Gloucester .

[Lands Of The Normans] 11 November 1210 – The abbot of Leicester is summoned to show why he will not allow John du Hommet to present his own parson to the church of Humberstone which is vacant and to whom the presentation pertains; the abbot comes and says that he justly impeded him, because he is and has been for a long time seized of the said advowson, and the advowson is his and his church’s right as by the gift of Jordan father of the said John and the abbot has a charter. John says that Jordan could not grant them the advowson, because he only had the keeping of the land in which the said church is site by John’s mother, of whose inheritance that land was, and John claims the judgement of the court, and the abbot says that he is his father’s heir and should warrant them. A day is given for the octaves of Hilary to hear judgement.

[Lands Of The Normans] 26 September 1216 – The king has granted to William de Cantilupe the whole lands of John du Hommet. Order to the sheriffs of Northamptonshire and of Warwickshire and Leicestershire to deliver seisin.
