Biography
George Honesty is a part of US Black heritage.
George Honesty was born about 1845 in Virginia. His wife was called Jane and in 1880 they lived in Washington, DC and had three children: Walter, born about 1870, Geneva, born about 1873, and Augustus, born about 1876. He was a janitor at Columbia University.[1]
He is probably the same person as George Honesty, found in the 1870 census (Washington DC) with wife Jane and son Walter (ages aligning with the 1880 census).[2] In 1900 George F. Honesty (widowed) is living with his two sons, Walter (born about 1869) and Henry A (born about 1876, who matches Augustus found in the 1880 census and is named Harry Augustus in several other records) in Washington DC. He is a day laborer and his son Walter is a college janitor.[3]
He married Amanda Winfree on 18 December 1900 in Washington, DC.[4]
He died on 10 May 1919 in Washington. At the time of death he was a janitor. He was buried in the now-defunct Harmony Cemetery.[5][6]
Research notes
Son Walter's death record indicates that his father was Frank.[7]
There is a Geo F. Honesty, black, age 14, enumerated at Fairfax, Virginia in 1860. He is living with Elizabeth Honesty, 57.[9] This record roughly matches a black family living in Fairfax in 1850 (parents John and Elizabeth).[10]
