Ruby Jean Hopkins was born about 1922 in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama, United States. (Estimate based on the 1930 United States Census.) She was the daughter of Holmes Adolphus Hopkins (1886-1962) and Clara L. (Lang) Hopkins (1890-1934).[1]
Ruby Jean was 8 years old when the 1930 United States Census was taken. She was living in the household of her parents at 1325 East Gadsden Street in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida.[2]
Ruby Jean's mother, Clara Lang Hopkins, died in 1934.[3] Ruby "Gene" Hopkins was named in her obituary as one of her surviving children.[4]
When the 1935 Florida State Census was taken, Ruby Jean and two of her siblings were living in the household of her sister and her sister's husband in Escambia County, Florida. Ruby Jean was 13 years old and a 7th grade student.[5]
When the 1940 United States Census was taken, Ruby Jean, who was 18 years old, and her brother Jack were living with Alban Stewart in Panama City, Bay County, Florida, Her relationship to him was described as sister-in-law, however Alban Stewart's status was recorded as single.[6]
Ruby Jean Hopkins was married to Charles Long Joyner on 22 February 1941 in Wewahitchka, Gulf County, Florida.[7] They were the parents of 3 children who were named in her obituary.[1] Daughter, Ethel Carolyn (Joyner) Howard, is deceased.[8] The other two children are potentially still living.
Jean, her husband Charles, and their 4 year old daughter, were living at 1106 Friendship in Bay County, Florida when the 1945 Florida State Census was taken.[9]
Jean and Charles were the parents of 2 children at the time the 1950 United States Census was taken. They were making their home at 1608 10th Street in Panama City, Bay County, Florida. Jean was working as the secretary in the office of the principal of the city grammar school.[10]
Ruby Jean's father died in 1962. In his obituary, she was mentioned as Mrs. Charles Joyner, one of her father's surviving children.[11]
From her obituary: "She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and served in the past as a member of the choir and the altar Guild. She was a cub scout Den Mother and was active in PTA. Mrs. Joyner was employed by the Bay County School Systems for six years as bookkeeper at St. Andrew Grammer and Jinks Jr. High School and for eighteen years at the Educational Media Center."[1]
Ruby Jean Hopkins Joyner passed away on 03 April 2015 in Panama City, Bay County, Florida. She was 93 years old.[1] She was buried in Saint Andrews Episcopal Church Memorial Garden, Panama City, Bay County, Florida.[12]
