Biography

Kate Laura Hopkins was born on 16 June 1861 in Hopkinsville, Gonzales, Texas, Confederate States of America, during the US Civil War. She was the daughter of Dennis Sheffield Hopkins, 24 May 1819 – 27 September 1917, a native of Clark County, Georgia, USA, and his wife, Sarah Jane (Motley) Hopkins, 7 December 1821 – 30 July 1904, also from Georgia. They had been married on 29 December 1839 in Morgan County, Georgia, USA.

On 2 July 1878 in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas, Kate L. Hopkins married David Alexander Petty (1859-1918). ^[1] The couple had 3 sons and 5 daughters, including Susan Ernestine (Petty) Weston (1893-1956).

David Alexander Petty passed away on 17 September 1918 in Coleman, Coleman County, Texas, USA. He was buried at Moore Cemetery. Clarita, Coal County, Oklahoma, USA. ^[2]

Kate L. (Hopkins) Petty survived her husband's death for another 40 years. She later moved to California where her daughters, Willie (Petty) Wood & Sue (Petty) Weston, lived. She passed away on 16 June 1958 in Tulare County, California, USA. ^[3] She was buried near her daughter Willie's grave at the Visalia Public Cemetery, Visalia, Tulare County, California, USA. Section D, Block E, Lot 17, N/E Grave. ^[4]
