Joseph Hornsby was Charlotte's stepfather - her last name at birth was actually MAYES, according to the birth registrations of her children (and confirmed by her christening record). She was christened as Charlotte Burn Mayes, and her marriage was registered as Charlotte Mayes Burn - Burn was most likely the surname of her father, as her mother was unmarried when she was born.
