Biography

Daniel Horsmanden was baptized 16 March 1583 in St Mary's Church at Lenham, Kent, the son of Richard Horsmanden.[1]He received his B.A. from St John's College of Cambridge University in 1604,[2] an M.A. in 1607,[2] a D.D. from Oxford University in 1617,[2] and a second D.D. from Cambridge in 1627.[2] He was Rector of Whipsnade, Bedfordshire in 1622;[2] Vicar of Goudhurst in 1625;[2][3] and from 1627 the Rector of Ulcombe, in which position he succeeded his own father.[2][4]

He married Ursula St Leger 27 August 1627 in All Saints Church at Ulcombe, Kent.[5][6] His year of birth is incorrectly identified as 1587 in his marriage records (he was baptised in 1583), he was actually about 44 years of age and Ursula was 18 when they were married. They had six children:

  4. Anthony Horsmanden, bp. 25 Apr 1635[10]

  6. Susanna Horsmanden Chapman[11]

Daniel Horsmanden died sometime after his will was written on 27 January 1655 and it was proved on 24 June 1656.

Daniel Horsmanden of Maidstone, County Kent, Doctor in Divinity, being aged and weak. 27 Jan 1655.

To Ursula, my wife, over and above her joynture, all furniture, bedding, etc. to furnishe her one chamber.Wheras [sic] I have a judgement against my brother Sir Anthony St Leger, my will is that whatsoever may be received, my daughter Chapman shall have three parts thereof and my sonne Warham the remainder. To my sonne Warham Horsmanden, and his heirs forever, all my messages, lands and tenements whatsoever. To my sonne Anthony Horsmanden - 200 pounds. To my sonne Richard Horsmanden, 10 pounds a year. Residuary Legatees and Executors: my two sonnes Warham and Anthony. To my sister Elizabeth Cobham, widow; Anne Smith, wife of Bryan Smith; Clarke; Rebecca St Leger, wife of John St Leger, gent; my friend William Cooper, Esqr.; and Nicholas Beaver, 20 shillings each to buy them rings.
