Elizabeth was a daughter of Jacob & Magdalena Hauck, wife of Henry Sliffe, and one of the original settlers of Shanesville, Ohio. She and Henry had children Jacob, Henry Jr., Susanna, John, Anna, Philip, Mary and Frederick.
In 1808, Henry walked from Pennsylvania, took up a tract of land north of what would become Shanesville six years later, and built a cabin. He then brought Elizabeth and the first of their children by wagon, only to return to Pennsylvania after the first summer because of threat of Indian attack. They settled on the property permanently in 1811, although all other settlers in the area moved closer to New Philadelphia, as the rumors of Indian raids became prevalent during the War of 1812. They were also among the founding members of the German Reformed church at Shanesville.
