Biography

SAMUEL HOUGH OF PA AND POSSIBLY VA

Samuel HOUGH (15 Apr 1739 Bucks Co, PA - ) was said to be the eleventh and youngest child of John and Elizabeth (TAYLOR) HOUGH of Bucks Co, PA.. His birth was not recorded in the Falls Monthly Meeting (Quakers), nor is he identified on any Bucks county record. There is no record which ties this Samuel HOUGH to that of John and Elizabeth after his birth. What follows is what may have happened.

Several of this family of John and Elizabeth moved to Loudoun Co, VA. It may be that Samuel joined in this movement. There is some indication that a Samuel HOUGH, Jr, was active there by 13 Apr 1783 when he witnessed Samuel HOUGH's Quaker marriage to Ann STABLER. Again, on 13 Nov 1803, Samuel HOUGH, Jr, witnessed a Quaker marriage of Jonah HOUGH to Pleasant HAGUE in Loudoun Co.

As for a wife and family, there is no record among the Quakers which seems to be this Samuel. It is possible he never was in the Quaker faith. It does not seem that he died young, but he certainly left few traces. There were three persons or families in Loudoun Co, VA, which might fit the age for sons of this Samuel.

  1. Samuel, Jr (c 1770 - poss d c 1818). The reason that he may have died in 1818 is that Samuel HOUGH, 3rd, son of John and Lydia, began calling himself Semuel HOUGH, Jr in 1818.
  2. Thomas (c 1774 - d by 1820) was on the 1810 census with wife , son, and two daus under 10.
  3. James (c 1775 - ) was on the Loudoun Co census in 1810 and 1820. The 1810 census may have incl two families in the same hh.

After studying the Quaker records, and the county records in both Bucks Co, PA, and Loudoun Co, VA, O. L. HOUGH could suggest was the above hypothesis[1].

Hough lineage is Samuel of PA and possibly VA; John and Elizabeth (Taylor) of PA; Richard and Margery (Clowes) of England and PA;
