Biography

George Houghton was born in Westwell, Kent, England.

George Henry Houghton was born in 1870 in Westwell, Kent, England. He was the son of George Houghton and Lydia Vant. He was christened on 5 Aug 1870 in Westwill, Kent, England.^[1]

In 1871 he was an infant living with his parents and sister in Westwell, Kent, England. His father was a laborer.^[2]

At age 3 he emigrated to New Zealand with his parents.

He married Lucy Frances Goodin in 1897 in New Zealand.^[3][4]

He died on 15 Aug 1939 in Featherston, South Wairarapa, Wellington, New Zealand.^[5][6][7]

OBITUARY MR G. H. HOUGHTON.

The death occurred in the Greytown Hospital on Tuesday of Mr George Henry Houghton. The late Mr Houghton was born in Featherston, where he spent the whole of his life, having been engaged in farming, metal carting. and for many years, in moving stock in trucks at the local station as they were loaded at the trucking yards. In recognition of his long services the Railway Department, on the termination of his services, granted him and his wife a free pass for one month over the railways of the North Island. The late Mr Houghton and Mrs Houghton had also an exceptionally long service as caretakers of the Featherton School, and on their retirement were made a presentation at a public meeting. The late Mr Houghton is survived by his widow and two brothers, Mr Charles Houghton (Featherston), and Mr Ernest Houghton (Masterton).^[8]

Note his obituary says he was born in Featherston. However he arrived in New Zealand in 1874 with his parents.
