Biography

c. 1849: John B. Houghton is born in Georgia to James A. and S. Houghton. [1]

1850 Census: J. B. Horton, age 1 year, is in the household of his parents, J. A. age 28 and, S. (24) Horton. The family resides in Henry County, Georgia. The record reflects that both J. B. and his father were born in Georgia but that his mother was born in North Carolina.[2]

c. 1858: John’s parents relocate the family to Texas.

1860 Census: John is 10 and resides in rural Upshur County, Texas in the household of his parents, J. A. and Susan Haughton. John has two siblings Thomas (8), and Abbiy (4) who also reside in the home. The census taker records that both Thomas and Abbiy were born in Georgia.[3]

1 Jul 1877: John is united in marriage to Laura Monroe Payne in Upshur County, Texas.[4]

c. 1880: Lucille Lulu Houghton is born in Texas. Lucille Houghton Rodrick’s Death Certificate and Find A Grave Memorial record her date of birth as 16 Dec 1880. However, she is listed as Lulu, age 6 months, in the 1880 Census and the December date of birth is some 6 months after the 1880 Census had been recorded.[5][6]

1880 Census: J. B. (30) and Laura (17) are married and living in Gilmer, Texas. The census taker records that J. B. is a House Builder and was born in Georgia. Also residing in the household is the couple’s daughter, Lulu, age 6 months.[7]

21 Jun 1882: Daughter Ida Lee is born in Tyler, Texas.[8][9][10]

5 Jan 1883: Son, John Monroe Houghton, is born in Gilmer, Texas.[11][12]

10 Jan 1888: Another daughter joins the growing family with the birth of Mamie Houghton to J. B. and Laura in Rusk, Texas.[13][14]

31 Dec 1889: James Earnest is born in Texas as New Year’s Eve brings another child to the family.[15][16]

16 Jan 1891: The year 1991 begins with the birth of another son, Baldwin Loren, who born in Tyler, Texas.[17][18]

28 Feb 1895: John and Laura welcome another son to the family with the birth of Henry Jackson Houghton.[19][20]

4 Oct 1896: Son Jesse Benjamin is born in Tyler, Texas.[21][22]

6 May 1899: son Stearl Montgomery is born in Tyler, Texas.[23][24][25]

c. 1899: J. B. Houghton passes.
