His mother died when he was young.
In 1860 he was ten years old, and he and his father (a farmer) were living in Frederick County, Virginia (Post Office Buck Creek Valley). Gabriel McDonald, a farm laborer, and his wife and two children also lived with them.

His father remarried in 1861.
In the 1870 census Julius is listed as a 20 year old farmer in the household of Mary B Lovett.

Mary was likely his great aunt, his mother's father's brother's wife.
He married Harriet A Lawker on 17 Aug 1875 in Clark County, Ohio.

His father's family had moved to Clark County in 1831, and many family members were still there. Hattie was living with his father's sister Susan Osborn and her husband in 1870.
In 1880 he was a farmer in Back Creek, Frederick, Virginia, living with his wife Hattie and their two children Bland (4) and Mary (1).

Their fifth child was born on 4 Apr 1886 in Miami County, Kansas.

In 1900, he and Harriet were living in Ten Mile Township, Miami, Kansas with their eight children. He and 23 year old Bland were farmers. The census noted that Harriet was the mother of 10 children, 8 of whom were still living.

In 1910 they were living in Aubry, Johnson, Kansas with six of their children.

And in 1920, they were in Aubry with three of their children.

And they were listed in the 1925 Kansas census with three of their children.

He died in 1929 and was buried at Bucyrus Cemetery in Bucyrus, Miami, Kansas. Hattie died the following year.
