1861 census: Enumerated in the household of Clayton Palmer, sen., Schoolmaster, in Lyons Down Collegiate School, Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire: James Huggins was age 19 years and employed as an Assistant and Usher.[5]
1871: Corporal, serving with the 1st battalion of the 13th (First Somersetshire) (Prince Albert's Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot in Gibraltar.[2]
1876-10-08: Death of father, John Joseph Huggins, in the village of Allansville in the Muskoka district of northern Ontario, Canada.
1881 census: ... shows James at age 35 (which is off by about 4 years), employed as an “O Room Clerk” at The Raglan Barracks, St Aubyn Devonport, Stoke Damerel, Devon. (This is the same address given for his younger brother, (Samuel) John, in that census.) The census enumeration was recorded as follows:
- James Huggins, Head, married, age 35, O Room Clerk; born at Winchester, Hampshire
- Victoria C., wife, married, 22, Soldier’s wife; born at Bedford
- Margaret M.A., daughter, 5 months, Soldier’s daughter; born at Devonport, Devon
