Biography

Mary Ann (Maryann) Hughes was born in about 1801, possibly in Uley, Gloucestershire, England.

She married Thomas Reuben Smith on 20 May 1823 in Uley, Gloucestershire, England ^[1].

They had at least five, possibly six, children in England, before migrating to Australia. Samuel Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Charlotte Smith, Sarah Smith, Charles Smith and possibly a daughter Smith born in about 1835.

Reuben and Maryann migrated to South Australia, Australia with four children, aboard the "Katherine Stewart Forbes" which sailed from Gravesend on 27 July 1837 and arrived at Holdfast Bay on 17 December 1837. The children were listed as Son (c1824-), Daughter (c1826-), Son (c1832-), Daughter (c1835-) ^[2][3]. The children who correspond with the estimated births on the record would be Samuel (c1824-) and Charlotte (c1826-), Charles (1831-) plus the daughter (1835-).
