Maryann was born on 4 November 1843 in Islington, South Australia, Australia ^[1][2]. the daughter of Thomas (Reuben) Smith and Maryann Hughes. Her siblings Samuel Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Charlotte Smith, Sarah Smith, and possibly another sister, were born in England. Her brothers, Reuben Smith and Charles Smith, were born in South Australia.

She married William Grace in 1862 in South Australia, Australia ^[3] and their children were Sarah Harriet Charlotte (1862-1935), Charles (1865-1952), Elizabeth (1867-), Reuben Edward (1869-1956), Mary Elizabeth Ann (1872-), William John (1875-1948), Fanny (1878-1967), Eliza Jane (1881-1957), Emily Edith May (1883-), Charles William John Neil Taylor (1883-1954) and Myrtle Alice Rose (1887-).
