John Huigens was born on 15 June 1862 in Hopewell Township, Marshall, Illinois, United States. His parents were Everard Huigen and Catherine Toemmes.

He married Mary Fitzler on 29 January 1884 in at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois.
