Samuel Wellington Hunt was born in about 1799, the son of Thomas V. and Eunice (Wellington) Hunt, at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Samuel's father was an officer in the Revolutionary War and stayed in the army after the war attaining the rank of Colonel. It is thought Thomas was stationed at Fort Detroit, Michigan, when Samuel was born.
In around 1818, Samuel married Julia Ann Herrick, the daughter of Dr. Elijah and Lucinda (Prentice) Herrick. It is thought the marriage took place in Detroit, Michigan where, a year later, their oldest child was born. They had the following children:
Henry Jackson Hunt (1819–1889)
George Hunt (1821–1827)
Lewis Cass Hunt Sr. (1824–1886)
Julia Herrick Hunt (1826–died young)
Samuel was a career military man. He died as a Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1829 while stationed in the Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis Missouri. He was about 30 years old. No death or burial records have been found.
