Biography

Henry was born in Scotland between 1831[1] and 1836[2]. His first appearance is in Wilmington DE on the birth record of his daughter, Alice Livingston Hunter 1857. His second daughter, Mary was born in Maryland (certainly Baltimore) (1859[1] - age 10/12).

He is said to have had painted for the king as a young boy and later knighted [3] of Richmond VA. Clues to him being a young artist are in the 1880 Baltimore census just prior to his death where his wife is enumerated rarely first and he was listed as a 'Scenic Artist' and 'Insane'.

He is enumerated twice in Baltimore 1860, in the 10th wd[2] as a 'Locksmith' and as a 'Bellhanger' in the 6th Wd[1] both with wife Elizabeth age 35. His age is reported with a difference of four years, age 24 vs 29 yet both showing birth in Scotland. The duplicate enumeration might be somehow related to his wife's first husband, John Nikum that died in Baltimore yet "Late of Philadelphia" or of her mother, Eliza B (perhaps and likely nee Roberts) Corbett who had moved to Baltimore by 1849, when she married the Umbrella maker, Isaac Corbett presumed brother of her deceased husband, William Corbett who had d. 1848[4].

He married the widow Elizabeth (nee Corbett) Nicham/Nikum (b.1830 Birmingham, Eng[5]) abt 1856 perhaps in Baltimore. She was first married to John Nikum who left a will and passed on 8 May 1855 in Baltimore where her second child, Margaret (age 13) was born. Her eldest, Samuel (age 18) and third, Edward (age 10/16) were recorded in Maryland but perhaps in error. The name "Meecham/Nicham" was alluded and communicated to the Williamson family in Portsmouth, VA abt 1970 through recollections of granddaughter, Edith Allison (Hunter) Williamson, daughter of William Allison Hunter (1862-1937).

He is enumerated in the 4thWd of Baltimore City (age 37) and a "Machinist Engineer" with his wife (age 47), two daughters and son. His birth location as New York might be a clue to his immigration from Scotland.

He passed away after 1880[6] in Baltimore appearing ill as his wife is enumerated first with him as 'Insane' and a boarder, James Woodall.

Following Henry's death, Elizabeth would marry her business companion from Baltimore, James Woodall in Richmond VA. Her daughter, Alice "Agnes" and son, William would join them in Richmond both raising large families.

The 1860 and 1870 censuses of Baltimore have Henry as head of household. In 1880, Elizabeth is listed first with Henry as 'Insane' occupation, 'scenic artist'. The occupation significant as papers from the Marchetti family in Richmond VA and descendants of Elixzabeth's daughter, Agnes describe him as painting for the king in England.
