George Hunter should have been down the mine on the day of the Kaitangata mine disaster, but he slept, was a coal miner. 1 Hunter was instrumental in opening Kaitangata coal mine (from newspaper clipping of boyd twins). 1

Passenger list details, George Hunter as comming from Lanark, occupation miner age at passage 26, Ann aged 29, Christina 4, William 1. Note George born 7 July 1869 does not appear on passenger list. The Hunters were assisted emigrants. 1

Dunedin Public Library, Otago Daily Times Sat 29 August 1874, page 2 under shipping arrivals, Corona Ship 1199 tons Robertson, from London, May 22nd Cargills, Gibbs and Co. Agents. Passengers 496 free and nominated immigrants. 1

The book White wings Vol 1 staes. Two passages were made to New Zealand by the Corona, 1200 tons, which brought out a large number of people to Port Chalmers. On 24 1874, she left the Old Country with 496 passengers. Final departure was taken from the Lizard on June 1, crossed the equator on July 2, made the snares on August 22, 82 days from the Lizard, and arrived Port Chalmers on 28 August, 96 days from port. In 1876 she brought out 318 immigrants. . . . etc. 1
