Ellis Henderson Hunter was born in 1845 in Quitman, Brooks County (then Lowndes County), Georgia.
In September 1863, at the age of 18, Ellis enlisted in Company E, 20th Battalion Georgia Cavalry, under the command of Captain Thomas S. Paine. He served until April 1865, when he was awarded an honorable discharge due to the close of the war.[1]
After the war he moved to Pulaski County, Georgia, where he worked as a section master for the railroad.[2]
In 1876 he appeared on a list of registered voters in Orange County, FL, which at that time included what is now Lake County.[3]
On December 23, 1877, he married Mary Elizabeth Wilson in Lake County, FL.[4]
In 1884, he purchased an 80 acre tract of public land from the Federal Government just east of Fruitland Park, Lake County, FL.[5]
He died on November 5, 1899, in Lake County, FL, and is buried in Umatilla Cemetery, next to his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hunter (Wilson).[6]
