Biography

Mary (Hurd) Hathaway was born in 1805 to (General) Timothy Hurd and Mabel Booth. Mary had nine siblings^[1]. She and Gilbert Hathaway married in Starkey, Yates County, NY on June 12, 1862^[2]. Mary died in 1891^[3]. The couple had five children. “Gilbert married Mary, the daughter of Gen. Timothy Hurd. Their children are Henry, Rebecca, Timothy, Ann and Frances. Henry married _______, daughter of Benjamin Youngs. The others are mostly out of the county^[4].

The duplicate given names and surnames can create confusion:

• Mary’s husband, Gilbert, was a twin to the Thomas Hathaway identified in the History and Directory of Yates County (Pages 114-116) ^[5]as “Thomas Hathaway of the third generation.”
• Gilbert and wife Mary Hurd, daughter of Timothy Hurd and Mabel Booth ^[6] were the son and daughter-in-law of Thomas Hathaway, Jr. (2nd generation).
• An uncle of Gilbert (3rd generation) named Gilbert (2nd generation) also married a woman named Mary Hurd: Gilbert, the brother of Thomas Hathaway, junior, married Mary, the daughter of Richard Hurd, of Rock Stream. He was a large land owner, and for many years kept a public house at Rock Stream, formerly known as Kurd's Corners.^[7]
