Robert was born about 1843 in Indiana.
He was the son of Julia Ann and Elisha Hurdle.
In 1850, he is attending school, probably in or near Nettle Creek, Indiana.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company B of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 20 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 9 October 1863 in Falmouth, Massachusetts. He died of pneumonia on 20 May 1864 at the regimental hospital on Morris Island in South Carolina.
