George William Imboden was born circa 1793, in Pennsylvania, a son of John Henry Imboden and Catherine Williams Fernsler. In May 1822, George married Isabella Wunderlich. John Henry Imboden's father, Johannes Imboden was born in Henau, Switzerland, and arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam aboard the ship, Two Brothers, in 1752 and was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Isabella's ancestors had also come to America on the Two Brothers, although on a different voyage.
In 1827, George Imboden purchased the three hundred-acre farm belonging to his father-in-law, also located on Christians' Creek some five miles east of Staunton, Virginia. It remained in the family until 1852, when they sold it to William M. Simms and moved to Lewis county, in western Virginia, with three of their younger children, Frank, Jim and Jake. John Kate and George William remained in Augusta county. In 1855, George and Isabella sold an additional six hundred acres that they had acquired in August Springs. Shortly thereafter, they moved again, this time to Braxton county, which adjoins Lewis county to the southwest. They were brought back to Virginia by their sons during the Civil War.
George and Isabella are found on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Augusta, Virginia with his wife Isabella(1803 Pennsylvania), and the following children:
The 1850 record was incorrectly interpreted as George Jenboeren. Reading the record clearly shows Imboden. The 1850 record of son John D. Imboden, just a few pages apart, was correctly read as John D. Imboden.
George and Isabella's sons James and John were in the CSA. James was a Sergeant Major in the 18th Virginia Infantry, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. John rose from Captain to Brigadier General from 1861 - 1863, and was noted for the defense of the wagon train of wounded during General Lee's retreat from Gettysburg.
