Sir Thomas Innes writes in his publication The Inneses of Benwall and Blairton, "However, the next occupant of Ardtannes, presumably son of Walter (who may be the Walter Innes of Ardtannes referred to as "deceased" in Sheriff Court Proceedings 12 Nov. 1608. (Abd. Sh. Ct. Rees.- 11, 141), was WILLI.AM: alias SEBASTIAN INNES IN ARDTANNES, who appears towards the end of the century, and since his son died circa 1612, had possibly been some time in possession. He undoubtedly had the peculiarity of bearing the alternative Christian names. of "William" and "Sebastian", why, it is not clear, and the latter is certainly a curious name especially appearing as we have seen so early as 1546 which is considerably earlier than its notoriety in connection with Mary Queen of Scots page. On 26 April 1594 Robert Innes of Elrick (a cadet of Benwall) and William Innes in Ardtannes were witnesses to sasine to George Leslie, a younger son of Buchurn, on the Sunny half of Hillbrae of Bourtie. (Bourtie M Muniments,Reg.Ho.) On the same day Patrick Barclay of Towie gave a wadsett of the sunny half of Old Bourtie to William Innes of Ardtannes and Marjorie Lumsden  his spouse, for  £1000, dated at Towie, witnesses Robert Innes of Elrick and George Leslie in Hillbrae. (Ibid.) Whilst also at same date 26 April 1594, and place, the said William Innes of Ardtannes and Marjorie Lumsden his spouse granted the relative Reversion over Old Bourtie, he subscribing “Wm. Innes of Hardtannis wt my hand". (Ibid.) He was dead prior to 1600, when on 25 July 1600 Marjorie Lumsden relict of Sebastian Innes in Ardtannes and Walter Innes their eldest son, had sasine of Ardtannes and Mill of Inverurie on a charter from John Leslie of Cults, (Aberdeen Sas. 1., 64.) Witnesses, Mr. William Leslie of Westhill, John Leslie of Mylnbuiy, John Leslie of Flindors, James Leslie in Ardoyne, and John Leith, appearand of Harthill. These deeds make it clear that Marjorie Lumsden's spouse, the miller and tacksman, of Ardtannes, was alternatively named “William” and "Sebastian"."
