Alexander was born and baptised at Drumoak, Aberdeenshie on 4 Oct 1754 [1] [2] He was the oldest child of Alexander Irvine of Artamford, 17th Laird of Drum and Mary Ogilvie. [3]
On the death of his father in 9 February 1761 Alexander Irvine, a minor aged six, now succeeded, and possessed the estates of Drum for upwards of eighty-three years. The guardians of the minor commenced an action to reclaim the entailed estates of the family which had been illegally alienated. [4]
Alexander Irvine of Drum served heir to his father, Alexander Irvine of Drum, in the lands of Drum, heir special in the Mains and Manor place of Crimond, Kirktown of Crimond, Hilldead of Bilbo, August 26 1761. In 1766 he served heir to his grandfather Alexander Irvine of Artamford, Crimond and Drum as heir of Tailzie and provision general. [5]
Alexander married Jean Forbes of Schivas on 31 December 1775 at Drumoak [3] [6] [7] [5] [8]
Alexander and Jean had four sons and one daughter: (1) Alexander, who succeeded his father; (2) Charles, who died 7th March, 1845; (3) Hugh, who died 11th October, 1829; (4) Francis, who died in Edinburgh; and Christian, who died at Drum, 1st July, 1856. [6] [5]
Jean died on 12th March 1786. [3] [4] This left the laird a widower at 32. He was a J. P., an active Magistrate, and for some time Convener of the County of Aberdeen. He spent the greater part of the very long period, 83 years, during which he held the now small estate, at Drum, and as time wore on led a very retired life. I spent some of my holidays at Drum in 1836, 1838, and 1843, and I think in 1840, and remember him as a kindly old gentleman, but did not see much of him. [9]
At the 1841 Scotland Census Alexander and his daughter Christian are living at Drum Castle along with 6 female servants, 2 male servants and a gardener [10]
Alexander died at Drum Castle on 1 August 1844 at 91 years old. [6]
Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeen. IGI (International genealogical Index [Family Serach]) and SCR (Scottish Church Records) match exactly Burke's Commoners for marriage and children.
