My Johnson Family Story

Family story is that he walked off during the Civil War and never came back. Military records show he served as Private in Company G, 19th La. Inf. He enlisted 12-11-1861 at Camp Moore, La., was appointed 5th Sgt on 05-04-1862 but was reduced in rank on 7-20-1862. He deserted several times and was captured near Columbia, TN. on 12-22-1864. He went to Military Prison at Louisville, KY from Nashville, TN. in 01-1865 and died 2-23-1865 at Camp Chase Ohio Federal Priso of pneumonia. We have not proved that this is our George James, but will claim him until we find some proof that he is not. Family story is that George came to Louisiana as a singing teacher. There are quite a few James with good voices. Maybe they have inherited George's singing ability. Later talked to the husband of a descendant of George and Nancy who said her mother always told them that he just left one day and was later found dead on the trail. What trail we do not know, or if this is a true fact. It will always remains a mystery. See 1860 census of Rapides Parish.

As of 2003 we have found a George W. James from New York in the 1870 Caldwell Parish Census that is about the age George would be that married an Elizabeth Bolton that was 17. They married in 1861 and had 5 children. George W. must have died by 1880 because Elizabeth was married to a Simpkins in the 1880 Census. I believe this has to be our George since he left Nancy about 1860, I have been in contact with one of his descendants and he is convinced that they are one and the same. Marriage license to Elizabeth Bolton (in my files) VLJ
