William Henry; Kate; Edward and Frederick were all born in London. The family emigrated to Australia in 1849 on the Mohamed Shah but it is known that Kate passed away before this date. The family travelled to Melbourne with their three young children and the next daughter, Amelia was born en-route “on the high seas”. The two youngest children, Louisa and George were born in Melbourne.
While in Melbourne Henry and Emma Jarman and family would have caught up with with Sarah Dede who had arrived in Victoria the year earlier. Later a number of the Pierse family also settled in Melbourne. Elizabeth Pierse and Sarah Dede were both cousins to William’s father, Henry Jarman.
It is not possible in this chapter to mention many of Robert and Amélie [Dede] Jarman’s descendants but here it is through the six surviving children of Henry and Emma that hundreds of Jarman descendants in Australia were produced. The oldest son to Henry and Emma, William Henry Jarman, along with his wife, Annie Fenton had at least nine children some of whom in turn produced a large numbers of offspring. The two sons who reached adulthood married and so the name, Jarman was perpetuated.

Only one daughter of Henry and Emma married, Amelia Jarman, and she married John Seelye on Christmas Day 1873. The Seelye family are descended from Captain David Seelye who was born in 1816 in New Brunswick in Canada. His wife was Isabella Cassilis, was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister. Captain Seelye was a master mariner who in 1852 captained the brig Australia to Melbourne bringing a load of emigrants from Canada. Captain Seelye died at age 48 in 1864 whilst attempting to salvage a shipwreck near Warrnambool. He is now buried in the Church of England cemetery there. One of his sons, John Cassilis Seelye married Amelia Elmore Jarman in 1873 at Emerald Hill. Amelia was the daughter born on Mohamed Shah in 1849. They immediately emigrated to new Zealand and lived in Dunedin for the rest of their lives.
A very important Jarman photo was taken in Melbourne about 1910. William Henry and Ann Jarman surrounded by eight of their nine children. There are also three members of the Seelye family. William’s sister, Milly and two of her children, John and Doll.
Back: John Cassilis Seelye; Lillian Emma Jarman; William Arthur Jarman; Amelia Isabel (Doll) Seelye; Henry Edward Jarman; Edith Eliza Jarman
Middle: Alice [Jarman] Kiely; Ann Negus [Fenton] Jarman; William Henry Jarman; Amelia (Milly) [Jarman] Seelye.
Front: Ethel Keily; Emily Harriet Jarman; Ethel May Jarman.
Sitting in the middle is William Henry Jarman who was born in 1840. As Henry Jarman was a cousin to Elizabeth Pierse; Mary Ann Elder; James Dede Smart; Sarah Ware and Emma Selkirk then William Henry Jarman was a second cousin to their children. William Henry and Ann Jarman settled in Balwyn and after their demise they were buried in the Box Hill Cemetery.
The two sons, Henry Edward and William Arthur Jarman married but only two of the daughters married. Alice married John Kiely and it is their daughter Alice who is at the front left of the photo. Florence married Herbert Burstall. Florence was the daughter missing from the photo as at that time she was living with her husband in Bendigo.
The Jarman family spread out and those that settled in Victoria lived at such places as Carlton, Castlemaine and Ballarat. It is believed that a number of Jarman descendants with that name still live in Gippsland.
