Biography

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
William Jarvis was born in Yorkshire, England.

Birth and Parentage

William Jarvis was born in 1759, the son of Benjamin Jarvis, mason of Bridge St., Dockside, Hull. He was christened on 30 May 1759 in Holy Trinity Church, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, [1][2]the parish church nearest the dock area where he was born.[3]

Life

Three days after he and a Joshua Craven acted as witnesses to the bond of one John Watson as apprentice to master Thomas Watson, House Carpenter of Hull, [4] William Jarvis, Joiner, was initiated into Freemasonry at Lodge no. 436 E 'Rodney Lodge' Kingston-Upon-Hull on 5 February 1789. [5]The 'brothers' met at either the Bull and Sun Inn or the Freemasons' Hall, both at Mytongate, Hull, a street which no longer exists today, but which was once known for its seedy and scandalous goings-on. [6][7][8]

He appears in Battle's Post Office Directory for 1791 as a carpenter, living at Whitefriargate, under what is probably the entry of his father, Benjamin. [3]

Marriage and Family

He married Mary Jenkinson in Holy Trinity Church, Kingston upon Hull, by license, on 11 February 1790, and his profession was given as 'joiner'.[9][10]

In 1791 his daughter Ann Elizabeth was baptised at Saint Mary's church, Kingston Upon Hull, [11]a 6 minute walk from Whitefriargate, and his wife's name was given as 'Mary' in the record. [12]Another daughter, Eleanor Clarkson Jarvis, was born and christened in the same church on 27 May 1793. [13]

He may have voted in the famous 1807 Yorkshire Election in which William Wilberforce, born in Hull in 1759, was elected Independent Tory Member of Parliament for York. [14]

He may have been the Mr William Jarvis who gave

a benefaction of 5 guineas to the Hull General Infirmary,

reported by the Hull Advertiser on Saturday 17 November [15]and the Hull Packet on Tuesday 20 November 1810.[16]

Death

A death notice in the Tuesday 20 June 1815 Hull Packet for William Jarvis formerly of this place stated that he had died in Baltimore, Maryland. USA on 11 March 1815. [17] It is possible that he had got caught up in the 1812 War between the USA and Britain.

I certainly will if I do! I imagine you've seen this before already? I've had a look through and I don't think there are any connections, but you'd know better than I.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I did not see any leads there. JSC

I'm seeking links to my ancestor Philip Jarvis-3246 born in Maryland and migrated to Eastern Ohio. If you find possible connections to a Jarvis family coming from England to Maryland before 1800, please let me know. Thanks from Jane
