Biography

Samuel Jeffus was born about 1755. He married about 1781.

He served thirty days as a horseman under Captain John Cunningham of Hill’s Regiment in the fall of 1780 and was in the Battle of Blackstocks on 20 November 1780. He then served twenty-four days under Captain Benjamin Harrison of Bratton’s Regiment in the summer of 1781 and was promoted Sergeant. He served a third time for forty-six days in the summer of 1782 as a Sergeant under Captain John Henderson and Lieutenant Henry Carswell of Bratton’s Regiment at Edisto, South Carolina. He received payment for his service in 1784.[1]

On 12 August 1789, he purchased one hundred acres on Beaverdam Creek in Rutherford County, North Carolina, from James Metcalf for £60.[2] He seems to have been missed on the 1790 census.

On 15 December 1807, he sold his land on Beaverdam Creek to Edmond Harden for $265.[3] He then purchased 250 acres on Maple Creek and Knob Creek for $300 in 1809.[4]

On 7 October 1824, he sold one hundred acres on Maple Creek to Daniel Grigg for $100.[5]

He moved to Morgan County, Alabama, sometime between selling his land in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and 28 April 1826 when he served as a trustee for John Willis in a mortgage.[6]

Sometime in the 1830s, he applied for a pension, but his application was lost. He was still living on 21 July 1845 when an attempt was made to get him a pension.[7] He died before the 1850 census.
