Daphne Sheldrick was an author, conservationist, and founder of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. She was known particularly for the raising and reintegrating of orphaned elephants into the wild for over 30 years.
Daphne was born on the 4th of June 1934 in Nakuru, Kenya. She was educated in Africa, raised by parents who had settled in Kenya in 1909.[1] Her parents were Bryan Jenkins and Marjorie Webb Jenkins.[2]
Daphne first married Frank William de Medew Woodley in 1953.[2] They divorced in 1959, having had one child. She married a second time on the 20th of October 1960 in Mombasa, Kenya to David Leslie William Sheldrick.[1] They also had one child together.
In 2006 Queen Elizabeth appointed Daphne Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.[3]
Daphne died 12 Apr 2018 at age 83.[3] She died following a long battle with breast cancer.[2][3]
