Biography

Oscar Jenkins is a part of US Black heritage.

Oscar was born in 1899. He was the son of Lloyd Jenkins and Laura Sharp.

In 1900 he lived with his parents and three older siblings in St. Michaels, Talbot, Maryland.[1]

In 1910 Oscar, his parents, and five siblings lived in Easton, Talbot, Maryland. He was in school and could read and write.[2]

Oscar served in World War I from 1917 to 1919. A summary of his military record looks like this: "NA 9/28/17 pvt; pvt 1c 2/1/18; cook 9/20/18, Co G 301 Stev Regt; Co D 301 Stev Regt 10/10/17; 804 Co 801 Stev Bn 10/1/18; 804 Co Transp C 11/12/18, Hon disch 7/3/19, Overseas 10/18/17 to 6/26/19." He received a decoration: Order of St. Sava (Serbian).[3]

An army transport service passenger list shows Oscar traveling home from St. Nazaire, France on June 26, 1919. It lists his mother as Laura Jenkins and his residence place as Long Wood, Maryland. His rank was cook.[4]

After the war he went to Queen Anne's County, Maryland, where he worked as a farm laborer for a family by the name of Miller.[5]

By 1930 Oscar was married and living with his wife Victoria and their young son in Queen Anne's County.[6]

Between 1935 and 1940 Oscar, Victoria, and their son moved to New York City. In 1940 they were living as lodgers in the home of a family by the name of Clark. Oscar was working as a laborer in road construction.[7]

Oscar registered for the World War II draft in 1942. He listed Victoria as his nearest relative and their address as 112 W. 130th Street in New York City. He was working as a laborer for the W.P.A. The physical description says he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, 215 pounds with brown eyes, black hair, and a dark brown complexion.[8]

He passed away in 1953 and was buried in Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.[9]
