Educated at Harrow, he was commissioned Sub-Lieutenant in the 66th Foot Regiment in 1875, promoted to Lieutenant on 29 Nov 1876. He was listed as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion list of the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Berkshire Regiment).[4][5]
He succeeded to the title of Viscount St. Vincent upon the death of his unmarried brother from wounds received at the battle of Abu Klea in 1885.[6]
He married Rebecca May, only surviving daughter of James Baston, of Manchester and Barrow-in-Furness, on 17 October 1885 in the parish church at Christ Church, Salford, Lancashire.[7][8] They lived in Norton Disney Lincolnshire, in 1891, where his occupation was "Peer of the Realm".[9]
On 12 June 1896, he filed a petition for divorce from Lady Rebecca on the grounds of adultry with Mr. William Thompson. The divorce was granted on 8 February 1897.[8] He did not remarry.
He served as Justice of the Peace for Lincolnshire.[5]
